10 Easy Tips to Be Healthier and Happier in 2020

Hammering out a long list of largely unrealistic New Year’s Resolutions is almost always a buzz kill (sorry) & often ultimately, pointless. We tend to go whole hog on our quest for better health, better fitness, and frankly, better lives, hoping we can make it all happen as soon as possible. RELAX. Fresh starts can be really positive, not only at New Years, but after a job change, a move, a break up, or after just simply after boring ourselves to death with the same old dull routine and shoddy habits. When we need to recalibrate, the secret is to blow away the cobwebs, lay a good foundation, and to begin with baby steps and a few good mini habits to set us on our way. But why not make it fun instead of a drag? One simple crucial pivot is to get out of your comfort zone. Comfort is stagnation.

Good health, physical & mental, is the starting point for everything. Nutritional Therapist Sally Wisbey & I had a good old pow wow about the very best things one can do to ensure one is operating at full capacity in the new year and indeed, whenever you feel the need to mix things up a bit. We reckon jotting your strategy and thoughts down in a slick looking new journal is an excellent way to kick things off. Check out our food for thought below.

  1. Declutter. Who can focus on the juicy bits of life when you’re being dragged down by a shedload of STUFF that you don’t use or need & have to keep looking after? Cut the cord. I swear by The Joy of Less, by Francine Jay. It’s about a lot more than clearing your wardrobes. The book is a TOTAL game changer. Get ready to go from 0-60, fast. You will enjoy the ride.
  1. Lighten up. There’s no way you can turbo charge up your act mired in stinking thinking & over pondering. Try Yoko Ono’s timeless suggestion- ‘try to say nothing negative about anybody for three days, for forty-five days, for three months. See what happens to your life’. PS- that ‘anybody’ includes yourself! Read this amazing book too- MINDSET by Dr Carol Dwek, world-renowned Stanford Professor. Life changing.
  1. Set mini nutrition goals. Sally is a fan of ditching the dreaded diets & instead, committing to a number of little things like trying 2 new vegetables, fruits or healthy recipes each week for example. Switch from juices to smoothies (juicing removes the beneficial fibre which is required to help digest the sugar) & instead of swearing off sweets for example, try cutting back on a few things that aren’t great for you- like sodas. You’ll feel better and soon other good habits may follow as a result, naturally- and not because you made a resolution about it!
  1. Tackle low energy. Who can embrace life beleaguered with brain fog & fatigue? Sally is all for reducing sugar & refined carbs & eating less junk. She also suggests supplementing with a few great nutrients which are not usually found in a regular diet or multivitamin like bee pollen, spirulina, ginseng & rose hips (all found in Bee Energised energy & focus). You can do more & BE more, when you’re not so run down.
  1. Recharge your skin. Weather, over indulging and poor diet can affect skin. Along with eating plenty of fruit & veg, Sally says it’s important to ensure that you are eating enough protein & good fats such as nuts, avocados and oily fish as they all help with plumping the skin and keeping it soft.   1. Boost immunity to help dodge illness & allergies. Now more than ever it’s easy to get run down & find our natural defences on feeble footing. Sally advises taking it easy on sugar & coffee (matcha is a great substitute as it contains high levels of the amino acid l-theanine which is calming plus matcha & green tea, have an abundance of health benefits). It’s also crucial to try to manage stress & to do at least some form of exercise daily. Along with eating well, Sally suggests adding in a few natural immune system modulators which are not usually found in a regular diet but are very nourishing for the immune system- like bee propolis, black elderberry, olive leaf & beta glucans, which can be very effective for strengthening natural defences (find them all in Bee Prepared immune formulas).   1. Baby step fitness. Instead of making empty promises to go to the gym 6 days a week, why not decide to try one new fitness activity or class every week or so & commit to do 10 minutes of SOMETHING every day- sit-ups, leg lifts, a quick run, or anything you like. If you stick to it every day, you’ll find you often carry on to do more.
  1. Be calm. We all know about the colossal benefits of meditation. But sometimes it’s hard to take a chunk out of the day to do it. However, even a minute or two can have huge benefits. Cooking and walking in nature have also been shown to reduce anxiety & improve wellbeing.
