Help Prevent Colds and Flu, 7 Top Tips

1. Lemon juice! It helps restore the alkali balance in the body. Bacteria thrives in an overly acidic system. Have it in water, tea, salad dressings etc.

2. Avoid caffeine, it dehydrates you which makes you more susceptible to colds and flu. Try herbal teas instead or hot lemon & honey (try manuka).

3. Eat more protein. That’s right, carbs spike sugar levels in blood due to their high glycemic index which stresses the immune system and encourages bacteria growth.

4. Go easy on over the counter remedies. They often contain the same things like acetaminophen (as in tylenol etc). An overload can damage the liver.

Also read the label! Several cough syrups we found contain chloroform (eek!) not to mention ingredients that have been shown to be carcinogenic in large amounts. Now that ones guzzles these things I hope but still…who wants consume any of that stuff or think of children doing so. Remember all the cough syrup recalls a few years ago? There are lots of better natural remedies out there that do no harm and could provide more than just helping you feel better temporarily like most OTCs do.

5. Exercise. Research has shown that those who exercise regularly have half as many sick days due to colds and flus. Just because it’s winter that’s no excuse to lounge around on your backside. You may end up paying a price! However- over exercising has been shown to reduce immune function. See an article written my one of our nutritionists for Sportsister Magazine.

6. Eliminate refined white sugar. Don’t even get us started. It’s hideous and a top cause for immune stress and other body calamities. Artificial sweeteners can be just as bad. Use natural sweeteners like stevia or agave or better still, honey. Side bar- sugar is the absolute, most aging thing you can eat. If you battle cravings, ee our recipe for sugar free chocolate truffles. Delish.

7. Dare we say it? Have a good immune support supplement at hand to take daily or at the first instance of a nasty bug rearing it’s ugly head or when feeling run down. It’s the ONE supplement you don’t want to be without in the winter months or during allergy season. A well functioning immune system is the best insurance you can have when it comes to helping fight off illness. Like a multivitamin, it’s a great supplement to take one year round. Bee Prepared immune support contains only natural ingredients which are not usually found in a regular diet (bee propolis, black elderberry, olive leaf , beta glucans, astaxanthin and more) which support, but never over stimulate the immune system. Sold in Health food stores, organic groceries and chemists and through our online partners. See our stockist page for details.

Having used these ingredients separately (and successfully), it’s great to find them all in one formulation but at decent strengths so I am not taking (and buying) four different products. Does what it says on the tin, as they say!

- TeCeAy , Norwich, United Kingdom, 13/4/2013 21:34

I’ve not had a cold or flu for 2 years since using this excellent Max Strength product. It works for bees (Propolis means “Defender of the City”) and it works for humans. Even the builders working here last year were given it when they looked like they were going to throw a sicky! Gwyneth knows her onions IMO.

- Lordteaspoon , Church Stretton, United Kingdom, 13/4/2013 15:17

I’ve used the Bee Prepared product and my conditions I hadn’t been able to kick went away. The product sells itself through its effectiveness. It’s nice to know that health conscious people including an Olympic athlete have discovered and believe in the product. The product is affordable and accessible to many. For those that don’t have store access, the product can also be ordered on-line.

- EM , Bethesda, United States, 13/4/2013 14:36

I’m going to try it. Not because of the article, but because of the comments. I get colds, and every germy thing going.. I hope this helps!

- Angel Bob , London, United Kingdom, 13/4/2013 14:28

Excellent product, excellent company, owned by ethical people. It’s really great to see them get the recognition that they deserve!

- Stephen Terrass , London, United Kingdom, 13/4/2013 11:48

Bee propolis is amazing in general. A well known product used for hundreds of years! 10 years ago when I was in my late 30′s I had a serious liver surgery and lost 10 kg (from 55 to 45 kg with my height of 170 cm) so I was in an awful condition. Bee propolis helped me to recover quickly and gain back my energy. It is also highly recommended for women to boost fertility. The brand name does not matter (well the quality does) but it is best to buy it from a well known local farmer for best results. It is also excellent for hay fever, a lot of my friends got rid of their allergies simply by starting to take bee propolis in small dosage and gradually increasing it.

- Cheshire Home , C., 12/4/2013 19:36

I cannot recommend BeePrepared enough! Excellent, high quality product with an ingredient list backed by research. A product you can trust- I do and I recommend if you want to keep hay fever, flu and colds at bay you should try it.

- APNutrition, London, United Kingdom, 12/4/2013 18:01

the lineup of ingredients looks great. I’ve taken them and they are really good. Bee propolis rocks. Highly recommend this!

- Jonathan Newman, London, United Kingdom, 12/4/2013 17:25

I began taking a bee propolis supplement (to prevent colds & boost my immune system) in 2002 & switched to Bee Prepared in 2010. It is a wonderful product. I’ve been working in a hospital for 10 years & NEVER get sick. Unbeelievable Health is a great company. I love their website-it has loads of helpful & interesting info. Bees are amazing!!!

- ESStewart, Stanfordville, United States, 12/4/2013 13:20

Propolis is one of the hottest nutraceuticals around at the moment and in this supplement it’s combined with some other excellent immune support ingredients. Whether you like Gwyneth or not, you should take notice of these products! They don’t contain any unsavoury ingredients and can help with hay fever symptoms as well as cold and flu – I’ve not had one cold since I started taking these Bee Prepared formulas.

- RJG, London, United Kingdom, 12/4/2013 10:57

Bee Prepared is an excellent product. I’ve been using this for over a year now and highly recommend it.

- Nutrition1, Surrey, 12/4/2013 10:41

I am prone to colds all year round but I began taking Bee Prepared Daily Defence last year and I have been cold free ever since. Great Product & Brand!

- davidm1978, dublin, Ireland, 12/4/2013 9:53

I am prone to colds all year round but since taking Bee Prepared for the last year i can’t actually remeber having any cold like symptoms in this period. Great Product/Great Brand!

- davidm1978, dublin, Ireland, 12/4/2013 9:47

I absolutely love the products Bee Prepared supply! I use them regularly and feel they really help and unlike some brands, really do work!

- Nadia Freeman, London, United Kingdom, 12/4/2013 9:40

My partner and I have actually used Bee Prepared – a friend recommended them to help with colds. I must honestly say they worked great for both of us at the onset of a cold. I would prefer to use natural ingredients than killing my immune system and loading my body with chemicals by taking Beechams, Lemsip and their kind! You can find them in Holland and Barrett btw

- Jane_I_78, London, United Kingdom, 12/4/2013 8:59

I’ve used the stuff and it does what it says. I ride an hour Tube journey each way and am guaranteed Underground Flu at least twice a season. Taking this I’ve not had it… I don’t know much about the honey bee propolis or the other extracts (olive leaf, elderberry and so on) but as a vegetarian this stuff certainly gave my immunity a boost…

Comments (50) The comments below have not been moderated.

I’m going to try it. Not because of the article, but because of the comments. I get colds, and every germy thing going.. I hope this helps!

A product you can trust- I do and I recommend if you want to keep hay fever, flu and colds at bay you should try it.

the lineup of ingredients looks great. I’ve taken them and they are really good. Bee propolis rocks. Highly recommend this!

Boost Children’s Immunity

With all the news going around about the dangers of antibiotic overuse & resistance, it’s a smart idea to make sure one’s immunity is in top working order to help avoid the need for antibiotics in the first place if possible. Certain foods, nutrients and lifestyle adjustments can really make a difference.

5 Ways in which you can boost children and teens’ immunity naturally include:

Wash hands but don’t be a germophobe
Good hygiene at school and at home is important reducing the spread of germs. Washing hands is a particularly easy and effective. However, extreme hygiene practices may have a negative effect on your child’s maturing immunity.

Eat foods packed with immune-boosting nutrients Serve nutrient-dense foods to help boost your children’s immunity. A few nutrients which are essential to supporting a balanced immune system are vitamin C which can be found not only in citrus fruits but in broccoli, kale, green beans, berries, cantaloupe, and watermelon. Foods rich in zinc, which supports immune cell function, include pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and seafood. Probiotic and prebiotic foods, balance gut flora and are essential to a balanced immune system. Natural, organic yogurt with no additives is a natural pro-biotic food.

Reduce refined carbohydrates and sugary foods Refined carbohydrates like pasta, bread, biscuits and cakes and sugary foods like soda and candy, can tax the immune system. They feed bacterial growth and contribute to inflammation which depletes and exhausts immune function.

Exercise! Research has shown that moderate exercise improves immune function for all ages. Turning off the TV, limiting the video games and getting the kids outdoors is a great way to boost children’s immunity naturally.

Try natural immune support supplements There are a number of immune boosting plant-based products that are extremely safe and effective for children. One of these is bee propolis. This resin is collected by bees, from tree and plant buds and is a natural antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial agent. Olive leaf extract and black elderberry are both effective antimicrobial nutrients which are also safe for all ages. Bee Prepared Immune Support Daily Defence contains these ingredients and others. Capsules may be swallowed or broken open and put into juices, smoothies or yogurt. A practical, delicious, and child-friendly way to include a few of these recommendations into your daily routine is with an children’s immune boosting smoothie. See below:

Immune Booster Smoothie:

1 apple, cored, peeled & sliced

1 orange peeled & seeded

1/2 cup filtered water or organic apple juice

1/2 cup natural yogurt

2 tsp honey (manuka if possible)

1 tbsp pumpkin seed butter (optional)

1 (2-inch) piece of fresh ginger root, peeled.

2 T lemon juice

1 capsule Bee Prepared Daily Defence (open capsule and use the powder)

Combine all of these ingredients in a blender. Enjoy!

One of the best ways to help minimise the effects of hayfever and allergies is to make sure that your immune system is in top working order, according to nutritionists and allergy experts. Eating healthily & supplementing your diet with nutrients which boost the bodies natural defences helps minimise symptoms.

BEE Prepared immune support with bee propolis and more is ideal not only for helping boost immunity BUT it’s ingredients are bursting with natural anti-histamine properties. Elderberry, for instance, is loaded with quercetin, a top natural remedy for hay fever.

Here’s an interesting article by nutritionist Erin McCann (published in Natural Pharmacy Magazine):

Treating and Managing Hay Fever With Natural Products

Seasonal allergies affect millions of people in the UK each year with aggravating symptoms such as sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, running nose, and itchy skin. These hay fever symptoms are the result of the immune system’s reaction to harmless pollen particles in the same way it would respond to harmful antigens. In this immune response, immunoglobulin E antibodies (IgE) detect the pollen ‘antigens’ and activate mast cells and T helper cells (specifically type 2 or Th2 cells). The increase of Th2 cells and the mast cell histamine release in the mucosa and peripheral blood result in inflammation, hay fever symptoms and atopic conditions.

Conventionally, hay fever is managed by using anti-histamine drugs to reduce symptoms. However, a more holistic and curative approach to treating hay fever is to modulate the immune system, reduce the histamine response and to focus on reducing inflammation. Certain nutrients and natural remedies can be helpful in achieving these therapeutic goals and in creating a long term, effective treatment for hay fever and other atopic conditions.

Black Elderberry has been used medicinally for centuries in the UK and in Europe. Black elderberry is widely known for its effective use in treating viral infections. Elderberry is also rich in Vitamin C and the bioflavonoid quercetin, both of which are powerful antioxidant and anti-histamine nutrients. These actions can help to reduce mast cell histamine response and reduce mucosa inflammation. Recent clinical studies have found elderberry effective at treating allergic sinusitis and rhinitis.

Reishi mushroom has been used historically as an immune tonic in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Scientific researchers in the western world are now beginning to understand the active constituents that are responsible for the mushroom’s immune supporting actions. Reishi contains the bioflavonoid triterpene which inhibits histamine release. It also contains oleic acid and cyclooctasulphur compound which have antihistamine actions. In addition to these anti-allergic actions, reishi contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients which may be helpful in reducing hay fever symptoms.

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid found naturally in algae. Studies have shown that astaxanthin is effective in modulating the immune system, specifically siting its role in balancing the Th1 and Th2 cells. By rebalancing these T helper cells, astaxanthin aids in reducing the hypersensitivity to pollen allergens. Astaxanthin is also a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nutrient. These actions may help to reduce the symptoms related to the inflammation of the mucosa.

Bee propolis contains a broad spectrum of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Bee propolis also has significant immunomodulating and anti-inflammatory actions. Propolis is one of nature’s most potent anti-oxidant substances, exceeding Vitamin E in anti-oxidant actions. Bee Propolis also has been found to effectively modulate the immune system without over stimulating it. The combination of these actions may be helpful in creating a long term treatment for hay fever.

When treating hay fever naturally, it is best to start supporting the individual’s immune system a few months before allergy season. By starting natural therapies in advance, it enables the remedies to aid in modulating the immune system and to regulate histamine responses before the reactions are acute and heightened with pollen exposure. For best results, try to begin natural therapies for hay fever during the winter months leading up to the spring allergy season.

A great natural product range for your shelves, which combines all of the above ingredients & more is BEE Prepared immune support which was voted ‘Best Supplement 2011’ in the Your Healthy Living Awards. It’s a medicine cabinet staple & great year round immune boosting supplement. www.unbeelievablehealth.co.uk

News: ‘Antibiotic Resistance on Par With Global Warming and Terrorism’. ~ BBC

Natural Ways to Help Avoid Antibiotics

With antibiotic resistance making headlines, we need to start considering ways to help avoid antibiotics and reduce the spread of superbug infections. Many natural ingredients can help build up one’s natural defenses.

What are the main factors contributing to Antibiotic Resistance Bacteria

1) Medical practitioners’ over-prescription of antibiotics.

2) Patients’ misuse of antibiotics with access over the internet and incompletion of courses.

3) Farmers’ overuse of antibiotics in livestock which are part of our food supply.

4) International travel which contributes to the spread of infections.

Ways to Help Avoid Antibiotics

What can YOU do to prevent catching and spreading Antibiotic Resistant Superbugs

1) Wash hands with soap and water. I know I mention this quite often as an immune support necessity, but this basic hygienic practice is the best way to prevent the spread of bacterial and viral infections. Antibacterial hand sanitizers and soaps may not be the answer. There are studies showing that use of these agents may be exacerbating the problem of antimicrobial resistance. A good rule of thumb is to only use antibacterial hand sanitizers when soap is unavailable.

2) Eat fresh, whole foods rich in immune supporting nutrients: Vitamins A and C, Zinc and antioxidant phytonutrients. Examples of these foods are citrus fruits, berries, pumpkins and squashes, dark leafy, green vegetables, and pumpkin seeds. Garlic also contains potent antimicrobial nutrients.

3) Use a natural immune supporting supplement containing antibacterial and antimicrobial agents.

Bee proplis and olive leaf are natural antibiotics. Numerous research studies have found both propolis and olive leaf extract to be highly effective against bacterial infections, including antibiotic resistant strains such as MRSA. One product that contains these two ingredients, as well as antiviral elderberry and immune building and balancing beta glucans, is Bee Prepared Immune Support Daily Defence. Bee Prepared Immune Support Daily Defence is suitable to take each day and can be an important part of your daily wellness regime. Bee Prepared MAX strength contains more concentrated amounts of the same ingredients plus astaxanthin and reishi mushroom and may be suitable for those with a more compromised immune system.

Our bodies and our immune systems are highly adaptive. If given the right care and nutrients, you can aid your body in its natural immune functions and reduce your susceptibility to antibiotic resistant illness.

We love that loads of people are starting to champion bee products, including Gwyneth Paltrow.

Gwyneth Paltrow, fellow natural health fan, publishes a really informative newsletter, GOOP, every month. See Gwyneth’s blog below about all things bee and which bee products she recommends (one of them is our very own BEE Prepared immune support). Buying bee products increases demand & encourages more people to keep bees. More beekeepers helps sustain bee populations which are currently on a massive decline.

We are grateful to Gwyneth Paltrow for doing an entire GOOP newsletter about bees & bee products & recommending our BEE Prepared immune support. She even includes some of our recipes. Read Gwyneth’s newsletter here: http://www.goop.com/newsletter/170/en

Bees are crucial to human survival. Many people don’t know that bees pollinate 1/3 of the food we eat plus grasses that cows & other animals eat. Due to pesticide use & other reasons bees are on the decline. We all know how gorgeous they help make our planet by pollinating flowers, plants & trees but did you know that thanks to bees we can enjoy coffee, chocolate & cotton?

Urban legend has it that Einstein noted ”if the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live”. That’s a little extreme & it is doubtful that they would ever disappear completely but bees are facing some serious issues & there are ways that we all can help. See how here: http://www.unbeelievablehealth.co.uk/bee-info

Many thanks to Gwyneth Paltrow & her glorious & aptly named assistant Eliza Honey (!) for putting together such a lovely & informative newsletter about bees & giving our BEE Prepared immune support with bee propolis, elderberry, astaxanthin, olive leaf and more & more, the thumbs up. They even included some of our fave recipes using honey & bee pollen. Gwyneth Paltrow & Miss Eliza Honey are the bees knees.

http://www.emmaforbes.com/bee-prepared

‘I admit to being germophobic. This means that because I hate germs so much people always come near me with them! I am a magnet to people who say ‘I feel soo ill hope I don’t have anything catching’ or worse still ‘Emma, I knew you would have something I could take, you always have good remedies with you’. The reason I carry remedies and medicine with me is because I am obsessed with NOT getting other people’s germs. In my ideal world I hope that people who have bugs will keep them in their own homes. There’s my rant! So as a result of all this I am a sucker for anything that – in these winter months – builds, improves and maintains the immune system. I am someone who is going to be prepared as much as I can to avoid those germs!!

A current favourite are the daily defence immune support pills from ‘bee prepared’ – yes bee propolis, black elderberry, olive leaf and beta glucans are going to do the trick for me…available from www.unbeelievablehealth.co.uk – I am a firm believer in the power of honey. When my kids were little I used to make something called ‘mummy magic’ which was manuka honey in hot water with lemon juice. It worked miracles on sore throats, you name it. To this day I believe honey is a really good cure for all sorts – so check out their site.

And in the meantime …stay well!!!’ Emma

* Thanks to Emma Forbes for the lovely thumbs up. Glad Bee Prepared immune support with bee propolis & more is a favourite supplement.

We are big fans of Emma, do check out her site! It’s great! http://www.emmaforbes.com/

This fascinating video on bee medicines, primarily bee propolis, is by one of the most renown experts on propolis, James Fearnley. He boils the history, research and the magic of this amazing natural substance, down to an essence.

Learn why it’s effective for immunity and human health in general. Bee propolis is a nutrient rich substance bees produce to protect the hive. It is a great addition to any health regime as it is a highly beneficial natural substance. Bee propolis has been used for thousands of years. Research has shown that it is is anti-oxidant rich and has anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-biotic properties. Learn more below:

Click for video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDCyvNfzKrY

Bee propolis is one of the most nutrient-dense and antimicrobial of all the bee products. Propolis is derived from resins collected by bees from trees and plants. Bees combine the propolis with wax to seal and sterilize their hive. Beehives are known to be one of the most sterile places on earth! Propolis contains an abundance of vitamins and minerals such as zinc and B vitamins. It also contains high levels of flavonoids, which are antioxidant phytonutrients. They are responsible for its antibacterial, antiviral, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumour actions.

The immune supporting actions of bee propolis have been the focus of numerous clinical studies. It has proven it to be effective in promoting the body’s natural defences and resistance to bacterial, viral and fungal infection. Propolis can be take internally to support the immune system or applied topically to aid wound healing. Bee propolis is the primary ingredient in Unbeelievable Health’s Bee Prepared Immune Support products as bee propolis aids the body in combating viral and bacterial infections without over stimulating the immune system.
